Best Media Room (under £15,000)

Winner: Cornflake for Kinsella Gardens

A creative solution which, according to the judges, “very successfully met a series of unique design challenges”.

Cornflake’s brief was to create a stunning media suite within a minimalistic glass-box room at this spectacular home. With two floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a third wall providing access to the large glass humidor, the room layout provided little camouflage for hiding audio-visual (AV) kit, let alone a sophisticated media suite.

The other significant challenge was the room’s sunny south-facing position and resultant screen-glare – not the ideal scenario for a media room requiring a high-quality, screen viewing experience. The room’s layout also meant that bookcases and doors were located in the only solid wall suitable for hanging a TV, making this project a significant creative design conundrum.

Cornflake designed an ingenious solution for the space. They selected a Samsung 55" ES8000 TV on an extending, electric motorised TV bracket, engineered so that it is capable of swivelling to face the viewer wherever they are seated in the room.

Sound is provided by a sleek and design-fitting' small Leon Custom LCR sound bar speaker (providing the front left, right & centre channels) with a pair of B&W CCM684 speakers neatly and subtly plastered out of sight into the ceiling. The sub channel is provided by a B&W PV1D Sub woofer. The system is driven by a Yamaha AV receiver, located along with the Yamaha Blu-Ray player and the rest of the hardware outside of the room within a bespoke rack, carefully designed to help minimise black boxes in the wonderful, clear space.

The significant issue of eliminating screen glare, and darkening the bright, sunny room on demand to create different moods and enhance the viewing experience, was addressed by installing a dual-action blinds and lighting circuit. The Lutron-controlled system is both stylish and simple to operate from a single keypad pre-set with four different scenes to cover various daytime and evening viewing options. At the touch of a button, Cornflake’s client can dim the room from daylight to an atmospherically-lit and ultra-cool screening den.

“This is a tricky room with lots of glass that was hard to design around,” says the happy customer. “I am amazed the Cornflake team got everything in as requested - especially the large TV - and that the audio sound is so warm and effusive despite all the acoustic challenges. The kit is simple to use and I now spend far more hours in here than I ever envisaged, it has become my favourite room in the house.”
